Kentucky-bred Pug Defies Early Expectations; Achieves Number One Ranking and Qualifies to Compete at Westminster Dog Show

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Kentucky-bred and -owned dog has overcome early challenges to become the number-one-ranked black Pug dog in America. He also has qualified to compete at Westminster, the Kentucky Derby of dog shows. “Ch. Woo Woo Jamaica Blue Mountain” – the dog’s American Kennel Club (AKC) registered name – will compete February 15, 2010, in New York City at the 134th Westminster Kennel Club dog show. The prestigious two-day Westminster gathering, which showcases the best of America’s purebred dogs, is the nation’s second longest-running annual sporting event. Only the Kentucky Derby is older.

The three-year-old black Pug, who’s call name is “Prescott,” was bred by longtime Pug breeders and enthusiasts Mr. and Mrs. Gary (Joy) Cupp, owners of Harlan, Kentucky-based Woo Woo Pugs Kennel. He is co-owned by the Cupps and Louisville businessman Steve Wilson, owner of Three Dog Bakery, the bakery and boutique for dogs in St. Matthews. Following his showing at Westminster, Prescott will return as official Three Dog Bakery “grrreeter.” He will reside with his older brother, “Preston,” another Cupp-bred Pug and retired AKC champion, at Wilson’s Oldham County farm.

Prescott’s show career almost did not happen. “We evaluate our puppies for show quality versus pet quality at eight weeks of age, and Prescott was the best-looking Pug – black or fawn – we’ve ever produced,” said Joy Cupp. His desirable physical characteristics included a large round head, perfectly square body, well-balanced features and beautiful coat. According to Cupp, however, their hopes for the Pug’s show career ended when he became a “gawky, ugly-duckling” following their initial evaluation. “Based on the dog’s changed adolescent, almost-gangly appearance, we placed him in Steve Wilson’s loving pet home, hoping but never really expecting him to blossom and mature into the top-ranked champion he is today,” said Cupp.

As a condition of adopting Prescott, Wilson agreed to allow the Cupps to show the Pug in AKC contests if and when they determined he could be competitive. They have been showing him nationwide for the past 18 months. He quickly achieved “finished AKC-champion” status, and went on to compete in even more competitive “specialty” shows. He ended 2009 as the top-ranked black Pug dog in the United States. In October 2009, Prescott was the only black Pug to receive a ribbon during the prestigious Pug Dog Club of America’s (PDCA) annual specialty “Best of Breed” show in North Carolina, which drew the best Pugs from across the globe. “I call him the ‘little black Pug who could,’ just like the children’s storybook train, because he overcame tremendous uphill odds to become the best of the best,” said owner Steve Wilson.

The AKC has a standard of how each breed on its registry should look, move and act. Prescott matches the Pug standard, possessing the most desirable physical and personality characteristics. Those traits include a large, round head; a compact, well-knit, muscled body; a fine, smooth, soft glossy coat; an exceptionally “cobby” body and level “topline;” a jaunty gait (movement); and, a playful, even-tempered, loving disposition.

Prescott will be guided in the Westminster show ring by professional handler Chuck Pate of Ellotsville, Indiana. A black Pug has never won Best in Show at Westminster.

Kansas City Three Dog Bakery takes ‘Puppy Friendly’ Pledge

Kansas City, MO—Three Dog Bakery has signed The Humane Society of the United States’ puppy friendly pet store pledge, which states commitment to not sell puppies, but instead support local animal adoption programs or provide literature that helps customers learn how to locate a reputable breeder.

Three Dog Bakery does not support the cruel puppy mill trade and wants to set a positive example of corporate responsibility. “Three Dog Bakery has a sincere commitment to the community, which includes supporting adoptions through animal shelters and rescue groups.” says Laura Blair, senior manager at Three Dog Bakery, Inc. “Signing this pledge is a way for us to encourage consumers to adopt animals through groups that adhere to the highest standards in the treatment of animals.”

The pledge educates the public on how to get a pet without supporting a puppy mill. It lists several ways a person can go about finding a new furry friend—adoption, meeting with breeders in person, and insisting on humane conditions. For more information about The Human Society and their HSUS’ pledge please visit humanesociety.org/puppy.
